Five great reasons to spend a day amid the charms of Chichester

There are a number of excellent day out destinations across West Sussex, but if you want more bang for your buck you may want to put Chichester at the top of the must-visit list. A glorious cathedral city in the west of the county, it’s been an important settlement since the days of the Romans. For those thinking about heading into Chichester this summer, here are five excellent reasons to do so.

History that’s all round you

Wherever you happen to be in the city, you’ll be overlooked by the dramatic 600-year-old spire of Chichester Cathedral. Be sure to go along and see it for yourself, and if you have a head for heights why not arrange a guided tour? You can also explore more of the city’s heritage with a visit to the excellent Novium Museum, located on the site of the historic 5,500-square metre Roman baths. The Bath House itself is a particular highlight of the experience.

Take to the water and unwind

One of the most rewarding activities of all in the city is also one of the most relaxing. The picturesque Chichester Canal is where you’ll find all the tranquillity you’ll ever need, accompanied by some glorious views. And for a special treat, why not sign up to a boating trip accompanied by a fish and chip lunch or perhaps an elegant afternoon tea? What’s not to love about eye-catching panoramas and mouth-watering food, after all?

Dip into the culture of a buzzing Sussex city

As you might expect from such a popular West Sussex day out destination, Chichester is home to a thriving cultural scene. The Festival of Chichester is a month-long jamboree featuring over a hundred different events, attracting artists and artistes from all over the world. Whether you’re into jazz, classical, pop, blues, folk or any other music, the chances are you’ll find it here. And of course, Chichester’s celebrated Festival Theatre offers a comprehensive range of year-round entertainment options.

Walk, walk and walk some more

This is a city that’s perfect for those who prefer two feet to four wheels, so park the car somewhere local and head off to explore. You’ll find plenty of interesting sights to see in the city, such as the canal, the historic streets around the cathedral and the Market Cross. Away from the centre, the Itchenor Circular Walking Route brings you dramatic views of the sea, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Isle of Wight.

And don’t forget the outlying areas

Chichester can provide an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding towns and villages. Bognor Regis, for example, is just eight miles from the city centre, while the ever-popular West Wittering is only seven miles from here. One of the more intriguing villages in the area is Bosham, which is a favourite with sailors. Located in the splendid Chichester Harbour, Bosham has become a magnet for birdwatchers, so be sure to look for our feathered friends while you’re here. The artisan shops and galleries in Bosham will delight all lovers of retail therapy with a difference.

Chichester really deserves further exploration, so make sure you set aside at least a day and come along and see it for yourself. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, a shopping aficionado, a curious foodie or you’re simply on the lookout for family days with a difference, this wonderful West Sussex city has something for you.
