Introducing Walk from Jill Windmill to the Chattri Memorial

Walking Involved

Some of the best experiences can involve nothing more than a lovely walk accompanied by stunning views and a poignant monument. Here in this idyllic corner of rural Sussex, you can take a leisurely stroll from one fabulous landmark to another, so why not set aside an hour or two and make tracks to the historic Jill Windmill?

The beautiful Chattri Memorial was built to commemorate the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in the First World War, and it stands proudly on a hill some 150 metres up, overlooking the city of Brighton & Hove. More than 800,000 Indian soldiers fought for the Allies, and 53 of them were cremated on this particular site.

The walk from the windmill takes around 40 minutes, with a steady but not overwhelmingly difficult incline. Access is by bridleway only, so when you get to the top you can appreciate the solemn tranquillity of the memorial itself. And the views of both the city and the sea represent an impressive photo opportunity.

Further information about the Chattri Memorial is to be found on the noticeboard nearby.
