Some buildings are so dramatic, so unique and so, well, one-off, that they need almost no introduction. Here in Eastbourne, a town that really knowns how to celebrate and embrace the different, you’ll find the magnificent Towner, an art gallery that’s one hundred years in the making, all enclosed in a dramatic, award-winning construction that, once seen, will never be forgotten.
Towner Eastbourne is located on the edge of the lovely Devonshire Park, and is just a short walk from the iconic seafront. It features a fabulous range of contemporary artworks from a number of well-known artists from the UK and abroad, and is also rightly celebrated as an art space that welcomes regular co-collaborations between artists and visitors.
The building itself, colourful and instantly recognisable, has been here since 2009, and is the largest purpose-built gallery in the south-east of England. In 2020, Towner Eastbourne was named Art Fund Museum of the Year, a fitting accolade for an establishment that as long been such a strong contributor to the local community.
It’s also home to a cinema, two eateries and an excellent gift shop, where you can purchase anything from art prints and stationery to jewellery and books. If you love to be a culture vulture, this wonderful place offers a Sussex day out that has everything.
