Without doubt one of the most celebrated – and one of the most popular – attractions in the whole region, the Bluebell Railway offers days out in East Sussex that provide the ultimate combination of heritage, nostalgia and good old family fun. Chugging its way serenely through 11 miles of gorgeous Sussex countryside, the steam trains offer a delightful opportunity to go back in time to the golden age of passenger travel.
Ever since 1960, the railway has strived to keep the flag flying for steam trains, and during that time they’ve developed and expanded a superb facility that’s enjoyable for visitors of all ages. Running from East Grinstead to Horsted Keynes, and stopping at Kingscote and Sheffield Park along the way, you can savour a single trip or purchase an all-day ticket and ride the rails for hours. The lovingly restored carriages offer comfort and style that seems to have disappeared from modern-day trains.
The Bluebell Railway also offers interactive exhibitions, family fun days and picnic areas for those times when you need to refuel. You’ll also find a great range of refreshments to enjoy at the stations. Each of the four stations is reminiscent of a different era, such as the 1880s, the 1920s and the 1950s. At Sheffield Park, you’ll also find an acclaimed museum offering a unique insight into the history of rail travel. All aboard!
