You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy everything that Tangmere Military Aviation Museum has to offer. Once the site of an important airfield, these days it’s dedicated to protecting the legacy of one of the UK’s most iconic bases. RAF Tangmere was formed in 1918 and remained the home of Fighter Command until 1958.
Visitors have a chance to get up close and personal with a wide selection of planes, as well as a fantastic range of aviation memorabilia. Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is run by volunteers, and it’s open to the public from February right through to November.
Among the many highlights, you’ll find several static planes in the museum grounds, a memorial garden – a place that’s perfect for quiet reflection – and the Battle of Britain Hall, which contains a number of fascinating exhibits.
Of course, every great day out deserves some delicious refreshments, so make sure you spend some quality time in the lovely Cockpit Café. And if you’re looking for some souvenirs of an excellent day, head to the museum’s gift shop.
Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is located close to the main A27 road, a short distance from Chichester.
