Sackville College

Ideal for: Couples, Families
Something of a hidden gem, Sackville College offers a fascinating insight into a living piece of history, right in the heart of East Grinstead

Sackville College in East Grinstead is a hidden gem that offers visitors a unique glimpse into English history, architecture and tradition. Founded in 1609 by Robert Sackville, the 2nd Earl of Dorset, this historic almshouse has stood for over four centuries, offering both support to the elderly and an enduring testament to Tudor and Stuart architectural design. The college’s charming sandstone buildings, with their mullioned windows and ivy-covered walls, provide an atmospheric setting that transports visitors back to a bygone era.

A visit to Sackville College allows you to explore its well-preserved interiors, including the Great Hall with its impressive timber-beamed ceiling, original fireplaces and period furnishings. Here, you can imagine the lives of the college’s early residents and the long tradition of charity that defined the institution. The college is also famously linked to hymn writer John Mason Neale, who penned the Christmas carol Good King Wenceslas while serving as the college's warden in the mid-19th century. Fans of English heritage will appreciate this direct connection to one of the world’s most beloved Christmas songs.

Guided tours of Sackville College, available in the summer months from Friday to Sunday, provide rich historical context and fascinating anecdotes, enhancing the experience of exploring this historic treasure. Located at what’s known as the top of the town in charming East Grinstead, Sackville College is not just an architectural landmark but a living piece of history. Whether you're interested in English social history, architecture or simply seeking a unique and peaceful outing, Sackville College is a memorable destination well worth a visit.
