English wines have been garnering global recognition for a number of years now, and East and West Sussex have been at the forefront of this. The area has become an important wine region thanks in part to its chalky soil, which is similar to that in parts of France. The relatively cool climate is also a factor.
One of the vineyards at the forefront of Sussex winemaking is Rathfinny. Established in 2010, it’s famous for a range of sparkling wines produced from hand-harvested grapes. One of the best ways to find out more about the place itself, the techniques they use and of course the wines they produce is by signing up to a tour. Winery and vineyard tours are extremely popular, so be sure to book in advance.
Rathfinny also plays host to various events, including weddings, corporate days out and business meetings. There’s accommodation here, too, for those wishing to stay overnight in an idyllic rural location.
You’ll find Rathfinny Wine Estate in Alfriston, within easy reach of Newhaven, Eastbourne and Lewes.
