Introducing Newhaven Fort

Immerse yourself in the history of Newhaven Fort by visiting the historic site. Built in the 19th Century, Newhaven Fort is the largest work of defence ever built in Sussex and is the last of a long series of coastal defences built on the cliffs.

One of the most pleasing things about exploring the many wonderful venues in East Sussex is that there’s so much history to discover, and a major highlight of that heritage is ready and waiting to wow you on the iconic coastline. Completed in 1871 and built to defend the nearby port, Newhaven Fort remains the largest defence-work ever built in the whole of Sussex.

From the moment you arrive and walk across the newly installed drawbridge, you know you’re in the heart of a hugely important piece of history. There are a number of fascinating exhibitions to experience, as well as a range of events to enjoy throughout the year. There’s an emphasis here on exploration that educates and inspires, so make sure you set aside some time to find out why Newhaven Fort is such an impressive place to visit.

The fort was vacated by the army in the early 1960s, and restoration projects began in the 1980s. As well as offering a highly enjoyable day out, it also gives visitors a chance to understand what life was like for soldiers working in a bygone era.

There’s an excellent gift shop here, located in what was once the guard room. Vintage-themed toys are a particular favourite, as well as a great range of jewellery, clothing and souvenirs. In addition, we think you’ll love the tearoom, which is inspired by British restaurants of the 1940s.
