Uppark House and Garden (National Trust)

Ideal for: Families, Physically Impaired
A tranquil 17th-century house set within intimate gardens and woodland. Highlights include an impressive doll collection and some exceptional views.

There are some wonderful days out in West Sussex for lovers of style and elegance, and this glorious 17th-century house deserves to be close to the top of anyone’s agenda. Uppark House and Garden is located in the west of the county, close to Petersfield and within easy reach of the A3(M) road. Managed by the National Trust, it offers a fascinating insight into how life was once lived. The house itself plays host to one of the most important doll collections in the country.

But there’s more to Uppark than the house, of course. The garden is absolutely beautiful, having been expertly restored over recent times. It features a meadow, woodland and a wide glade, and is perfect for tranquil walks with friends or family members. The views from here are dramatic, and on a clear day you can even see as far as the English Channel. There are free garden tours for those who’d like to find out more about the surroundings.

The house’s old orangery is now home to a superb café, also accompanied by picturesque views. Be sure to call in for a range of food and drink temptations. Sitting here watching the world go by is one of life’s genuine pleasures. And it’s also worth spending time in the old laundry room, which is now a second-hand bookshop.
