Nymans (National Trust)

Ideal for: Couples, Everyone, Families, Older Flyers, Physically Impaired, Solo Flyers
A garden lover's home for all seasons, with an extensive yet intimate garden set around a romantic house and ruins, this experience will surely delight every visitor.

West Sussex is home to a fabulous selection of country houses and glorious gardens, and Nymans surely has to be up there with the best of them. Located close to Handcross and within easy reach of Crawley, Horsham and Haywards Heath, it’s the perfect setting for a day of exploring for both young and old alike. If you like history and heritage, you’re going to love Nymans.

The house itself has gone through a number of changes since its original construction in the 1830s. It began as a Regency house, but over the years it was remodelled into a Germanic-looking property, reflecting the origins of the Messel family, who lived here for three generations. In the 1910s, it was remodelled again into a mock medieval mansion.

The focal point of Nymans is the impressive range of gardens, which are home to both formal and informal areas. There is much to discover, including more than 600 rose bushes, an elegant terrace, a South African meadow and so much more. To get the full effect, it’s a good idea to take one of their buggy tours in the summer.

At the top of the garden, you and your party can treat yourselves to some tempting refreshments in the café. Here you’ll find everything from light bites to full meals and all points in between. There’s also a tearoom in the Riding House, and in the summer be sure to try an ice-cream from the Horsebox.
