One of the best things about living in the county of East Sussex is that there’s so much history for you to explore, and it’s all right on your doorstep. Here at the wonderful Michelham Priory, there’s almost 800 years of heritage just waiting to be discovered, and given its isolated, rural location, it’s easy to understand why these days it’s seen as something of a hidden gem.
There’s plenty to see and do here, including a chance to view displays and exhibits that relate specifically to periods of the site’s past. These include the Tudor times and World War Two, when the priory served as a temporary home for evacuees and Canadian soldiers. The priory itself, founded in 1229 by Augustinian canons, can rightly claim to be absolutely steeped in history.
Outside, you can enjoy the seven acres of glorious grounds, the medieval gatehouse, the herb gardens and the dramatic moat; in effect, the land on which the priory sites is actually an island. For the youngsters, there’s an excellent play area that’s perfect for expending energy and letting off steam. Many families bring picnics with them for an al fresco lunch, and it’s easy to see why.
Michelham Priory House & Gardens is located in the beautiful Cuckmere Valley, close to the village of Upper Dicker. It’s within easy reach of Hailsham, Eastbourne and Seaford, and is an ideal venue for a day out with all the family.
