As you might expect from a village that has such a rich history, Cuckfield Museum is a firm favourite with both dedicated history buffs and occasional visitors. Run entirely by volunteers, it plays host to a fascinating collection of exhibits, drawn from a variety of sources from across the region. As well as a great selection of permanent displays, it also offers temporary displays designed to pique every visitor’s interest.
Cuckfield Museum first opened its doors in 1981, with a mandate to teach more about the village’s community, culture and historic past. Many millions of years ago, dinosaurs roamed the area, leaving behind bones and fossils that have now become part of the museum’s permanent collection. Famously, remains of an iguanodon were discovered locally back in the early 17th century, so it’s easy to see why Cuckfield is of historic significance.
Other collections of note to be found here include displays on clockmaking, ceramics, farming, coaching, teddy bears and maps. There’s even a sizable collection of birds’ eggs to explore. The museum also offers a programme of talks throughout the year, covering a wide range of interesting subjects. As well as being open to the public, Cuckfield Museum is also a popular destination for school visits.
