We all love getting out and about in Surrey and Sussex, especially when we get the chance to leave the stresses and strains of everyday life behind. If you’re looking to escape for a while into the idyllic countryside, why not get away from it all at Chilworth Gunpowder Mills? It’s tranquil here, and there’s plenty for you and the kids to enjoy. And it’s worth noting that there’s a great deal of history just waiting to be discovered as well.
Chilworth Gunpowder Mills was once a bustling industrial site, manufacturing gunpowder for almost three hundred years before closing in 1920. Now officially a scheduled monument, some of the original buildings can still be seen. It’s located in the picturesque Tillingbourne Valley, beside the river that shares the same name. Here within the Surrey Hills AONB, it’s so easy to forget about the rat race.
There’s an excellent walk to be enjoyed here, covering two kilometres along a predominantly flat path. Your children, and perhaps your dog, will no doubt want to have a paddle in the water while you’re here. Many visitors bring a picnic to enjoy halfway along the walk, although you might like heading to the pub in the village of Chilworth instead. The natural seclusion and the physical beauty of the area will impress you, as will the chance to savour an insight into what was once an extremely important industrial facility.
