West Sussex is absolutely steeped in history and heritage, and perhaps the jewel in the county’s crown is the magnificent Chichester Cathedral. A hugely important place of worship, the Cathedral represents a major tourist attraction, a fascinating architectural masterpiece, the home of a number of highly celebrated artworks and, of course, a vital asset for the whole community.
Construction began here in 1075, during the reign of William the Conqueror. Visitor highlights include a painting by Graham Sutherland, a window by Marc Chagall and the grave of composer Gustav Holst. As you might expect from such an iconic building, it has been represented in paintings by the likes of JMW Turner, Joseph Francis Gilbert and John Constable.
Chichester Cathedral is something of a must-visit for anyone coming to the city. As well as viewing the architecture and artworks, you can attend services, take a guided tour and enjoy events such as musical performances, lectures and exhibitions. You can savour delicious food and drink options in the Cloisters Kitchen & Garden, and there’s plenty of retail therapy on offer at the Cathedral Shop.
This is your golden opportunity to discover a stunning building with an exceptionally rich history. The Cathedral is easy to find, just look up and you’ll probably see the 82-metre tower! The building is located right in the heart of the city, close to the Market Cross.
