The River Arun is, at 37 miles, the longest river to be found entirely in Sussex, and it boasts a significant number of picturesque locations which are perfect for days out. It offers fishing, for example, and thanks to its approximate S-shape it has several pretty bends along its route. If you like being at the river, the chances are you’re going to love time spent on the Arun.
One of its most prominent attractions is the excellent Arundel Wetland Centre, a 65-acre sanctuary for birds and other wildlife. It’s managed by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, and it’s a popular attraction for both young and old alike. And the good news for everyone is that it features paved pathways that are suitable for buggies and non-slip boardwalks for those who aren’t too sure of their footing.
One of the more popular options here is to savour a Wetland Discovery boat safari, in which you and your family can enjoy a 20-minute guided journey and get up close and personal with the local inhabitants. Don’t worry if you’re not sure about what you’re seeing, because the guide will help you spot anything from kingfishers and reed warblers to egrets and birds of prey.
In addition, the Arundel Wetland Centre brings you opportunities to go pond dipping and explore the reedbeds. And when you need time to sit and rest, there’s an excellent café that’s waiting to welcome you.
