As well as providing one of the very best days out in West Sussex, Arundel Castle also offers a chance to soak up some fascinating history. Seeing the past come alive here is one of the county’s most impressive offerings, so make sure you don’t miss out. The story of this hugely impressive landmark begins way back in 1067, when it began life as a motte-and-bailey castle that was granted to Roger de Montgomery, one of William the Conqueror’s cousins.
These days, there’s a glorious garden to explore in addition to the building, which plays host to the state rooms, bedrooms, the barbican and the keep. The Fitzalan Chapel, founded in 1380 and damaged during the English Civil War, is also worthy of your attention. There’s plenty for everyone to explore.
The castle also boasts an excellent coffee shop, which offers a tempting selection of drinks, snacks, meals and indulgent treats. If it’s a sunny day, head outside and savour the ambience of the tea terrace as well. One of the most popular spots of all here is the Castle Shop, which provides delicious local produce, as well as gifts, toys and souvenirs. Sometimes a whole day spent at Arundel Castle may not be enough.
