Travelling around for the finest days out in Surrey

Surrey is one of the most picturesque counties in the whole of England, and although it’s not the largest by any means, it offers up so many wonderful opportunities for days out. Surrey is popular for a number of reasons, one of which is the sheer diversity of things to enjoy. Whether you want urban or rural, tranquil or exciting, high octane or low energy, you’ll find it right here.

In addition, it’s a county that’s relatively easy to travel around. There are no mountains, for example, or many examples of extreme weather conditions to prevent you getting from A to B. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of the glorious county.

Make sure you plan ahead

Whether you’re going by car, train or bus, a little pre-planning can go a long way. Go online and see if there are any major roadworks to inconvenience you, for example, especially perhaps on the notorious M25, which runs through Surrey from Oxted in the east to Staines in the west. If you’re using public transport, it’s always a good idea to check updates to train and bus timetables, too.

Spending a day in the town

Plenty of days out in Surrey are ready and waiting in the local towns, and one of them gives you a chance to bring out your inner TV star! The excellent Ninja Warrior UK is an exciting prospect for both children and adults alike. Other white-knuckle options include the town’s Wild Wood Adventure and Blue Spider Climbing. We hope you have a head for heights…

Exploring the countryside

Some wonderful days out in Surrey are more easily enjoyed if you have a car. Chief among these is perhaps Box Hill, a dramatic National Trust attraction that’s part of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It can be reached by train, from Box Hill & Westhumble, Dorking and Betchworth stations, but you’ll need to bring your walking shoes, too, if you want to make the most of the experience.

Be aware of the county’s major roads network

As well as the celebrated – and sometimes infamous – M25 motorway, Surrey is home to a number of major roads, which can help motorists to get to all the county’s best visitor attractions. They include the A23/M23, the A3 and the A31. The latter, which links Farnham to Winchester, will take you close to the wonderful Go Ape at Alice Holt Forest, a popular family attraction.

Heading to the great outdoors on two wheels

For those who enjoy outdoor activities, Surrey offers numerous options, and in particular for cycling enthusiasts. One of the best routes for those on two wheels is the Surrey Cycleway, which traverses the county’s scenic landscapes. Mainly using quieter roads and country lanes, it takes the rider on a 94-mile circular route. Look out for the distinctive brown signs that show you the way.
