You could have any one of dozens of perfectly good reasons to explore free days out in Surrey. You could of course be looking to keep your spending to a minimum without compromising on the enjoyment of the day, you may want to teach your children about the benefits of frugality, you might be spending less this week because you have an expensive week coming up or, perhaps, you just want to test yourself to see how much you can save.
Whatever your reasons might be, you’ll be pleased to know that days out in Surrey really don’t have to involve any financial outlay. So… the all-important question is; where do you fancy going and what do you want to do? Here are a few excellent places to visit AND keep your finances in order. Enjoy!
Glorious Guildford
Some say Guildford is the only city in Surrey, some say it’s not a city at all. Apparently, despite having a cathedral, it’s still a town, so there you have it. Here at GoLark, we love it nonetheless, partly because it offers plenty to see and do without having to spend. One of the best activities is the town’s free walking tour, highlights of which include the Quakers’ Acre, a burial ground, the town bridge across the River Wey, the historic Royal Grammar School and the excellent Guildford Museum.
Beautiful Box Hill
Few sites in the south-east of England can match the sheer drama of the views from Box Hill, a stunning location close to Dorking. There’s plenty to keep you and your party occupied here, including the chance to explore the remains of an old fort, to enjoy the mile-long pay area for the children, to traverse the stepping stones across the River Mole and, of course, to take in the incredible vistas. There’s also a café, but in keeping with the theme of this post, why not bring a picnic and enjoy an al fresco meal prepared at home?
Chilworth Gunpowder Mills
Right in the heart of the peaceful Tillingbourne Valley, you have a chance to go back in time at perhaps one of the quirkiest places of all in the county. The intriguing Chilworth Gunpowder Mills gives you an insight into what was once a hive of industrial activity. The Mills closed down in 1920 after 300 years of existence, and what we have left is a range of buildings and abandoned machinery that has to be seen to be believed. And despite the noises of the past, these days it’s supremely tranquil. The accompanying walk here is around two kilometres in length and features some truly beautiful countryside.
And there’s so much more…
Free days out offer a fantastic way to unwind and enjoy new experiences without breaking the bank. Exploring the local area provides a refreshing escape into nature, perfect for picnics, hiking or simply relaxing with a book. Many museums and galleries offer free admission, presenting an opportunity to dive into art, history and culture. Community events, such as outdoor concerts or markets, also add a lively touch to your Surrey day out, allowing you to engage with local artists and vendors. Discovering scenic trails or historic landmarks in your area can be both educational and invigorating. Spending a day in the country or in several other locations is another cost-free way to soak up the sun and enjoy water activities.
Such a lovely area, such a range of options… what more could you possibly want?
