Head to Surrey and soak up the history

These days, we tend to think of Surrey as a collection of quaint villages and suburban towns, all surrounded by a plethora of picturesque countryside. And while all of this is true, it’s good to remember that such an over-simplification can hide much of what this glorious county is all about. And, just as importantly, it can cast an unwanted veil over a rich and varied history. And that seems a shame, because this is a history that’s worthy of repetition.

One of the most important historic sites of all here is Runnymede and Ankerwycke, a location that’s steeped in heritage, and is the birthplace of modern democracy in the UK. The Magna Carta was signed here in 1215, heralding a new era, and the ‘Great Charter’ went on to achieve peace between royalist and rebel factions. The long-term consequences of this hugely important document are still felt today. To find out more, why not visit the site soon?

Head off, explore and solve the clues

One of the more intriguing ways to explore the towns of Surrey is also one of the most enjoyable. You’ll find a fantastic range of Treasure Trails set in a variety of locations, including Woking, Guildford, Oxted, Richmond-upon-Thames and Dorking. These are great fun for all ages, giving all of your party a chance to wander through the town looking for clues, often hidden on historic buildings. All you have to do is order an information pack, head out and let the clues unravel.

Surrey is home to a fabulous selection od stately homes, formal gardens, castles and more, many of them overseen by the National Trust. One of the finest is Hatchlands Park, a former country house that was bequeathed to the nation in 1945. The house itself was built in the 1750s, but the surrounding grounds go back many more centuries. Be sure to check out the marvellous collection of musical instruments, some of which were once played by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and more.

Celebrate the not so distant past, too

And if you prefer to see something a little more contemporary, the superb Brooklands Museum needs to be at the very top of the wish-list. This is an excellent facility that’s dedicated to the early pioneers of motoring and aviation, and appropriately enough it’s located on what was the site of one of the world’s earliest motor-racing circuits. Among the many highlights to be seen here is an original Concorde; be sure to sign up to the tour and see what life was like on this most iconic of aircraft.

Finally, you can get out and about in Surrey and still explore its rich history. Box Hill is a popular location with visitors, offering superb views across the county and lots of open spaces to savour. It was occupied during the Bronze Age and was the site of an ancient trackway that goes back at least as far as the Stone Age. Box Hill is an atmospheric place, and this is probably due to the heritage that seems to be part of its DNA.
