Free days out in Sussex: Sheer bliss on a budget!

Almost everyone is feeling the pinch these days, and is having to make cutbacks in their spending. In an ideal world, we’d all be able to afford fabulous trips out family or friends, but of course we don’t live in one of those; restrictions to the budget can always get in the way. It’s therefore highly reassuring to know that the iconic county of Sussex offers a great range of free activities that all of us can enjoy.

Sussex, a historic part of southern England, offers a wealth of free days out that cater to diverse interests, from nature lovers to history buffs. Here are some top GoLark recommendations for enjoying the county without spending a penny.

  1. South Downs National Park

This fabulous venue is the UK’s newest National Park, and it’s perfect for a Sussex day out that doesn’t need to cost a single penny. You’ll find more than 1,600 square kilometres of wonder that are ready and waiting to be explored. Highlights include Woolmer Forest, the only place in the UK that’s home to all 12 native British amphibians and reptiles, the South Down Way, an epic National Trail, and the moody but magnificent Cissbury Ring, the second largest hillfort in England.

  1. Beachy Head and Seven Sisters

This is a location that has everything: a murky history of illegal smuggling, a famous (or infamous) landmark for seafarers, stunning chalk cliffs and, it should be noted, it remains the backdrop to a million dramatic photographs. The views from Beachy Head out to sea are rightly celebrated and should surely always include the distinctive red and white Beachy Head Lighthouse, built in 1902 and standing at 33 metres in height

  1. Hastings Old Town

The Old Town area of Hastings is steeped in history and charm. Visitors can wander through its narrow streets, lined with half-timbered houses, antique shops and quaint cafés. The old fishing quarter, known as The Stade, features traditional fishing boats and the Fishermen’s Museum, which offers free entry and a glimpse into the maritime history of the town. On a nice sunny afternoon, there are few things nicer than going back in time at this historic location.

  1. Arundel

Arundel is a picturesque inland town with a rich heritage. While Arundel Castle charges for admission, the town itself offers plenty of free attractions. The beautiful Arundel Park is open to the public and provides lovely walking trails around Swanbourne Lake. The town’s historic architecture, including the spectacular Arundel Cathedral and the quirky Fitzalan Chapel, can be appreciated from the outside. Additionally, the annual Arundel Festival of the Arts in the summer features many free events, including art exhibitions, live music and activities.

  1. Brighton and Hove

What’s not to love about the city of Brighton and Hove? This is a vibrant seaside community, and it offers a variety of free activities. The Royal Pavilion Gardens provide a serene environment in which to relax, surrounded by exotic plants and beautiful architecture. Brighton’s beach is perfect for a day of sunbathing, swimming or simply people-watching. And for art enthusiasts, the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery offers free entry to its fascinating exhibits on local history and culture. The celebrated Palace Pier has recently imposed an entrance fee for visitors, but as this is only one pound perhaps we can regard it as almost free?
