There are times when a day out with the family becomes extra special, and here in the south-east of England we’re lucky to have a number of excellent venues just waiting to be discovered. We have ancient castles, dramatic countryside, sporting activities, charming villages, iconic beaches and so much more. Perhaps the most difficult question of all is going to be: where will you choose to go first?
Save money by packing a perfect picnic
One of the major costs that you’ll face on a family day out is with food, but you can easily forego the cafés and restaurants if you want. Taking a picnic with you is an excellent idea, and there are plenty of places to go in Sussex and Surrey that offer superb spots for some al fresco dining. In 2022, the fabulous Box Hill, for example, was named one of the six best picnic sites in the whole of the UK. Those cheese sandwiches will taste even better when you’re taking in the fabulous views and the freshest of fresh air.
Let’s all head for the beach!
The coastlines of East and West Sussex are home to a number of exceptional beaches, each of which offer fantastic days out that don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. The beauty of a day at the beach is that you can spend as much or as little as you want, so be sure to plan your time here and spend wisely. You can choose to say no to the likes of ice cream, sandwiches, amusement rides, deckchairs or anything else. As always, the extent to which you spend can be entirely up to you.
Find out more without becoming poor!
We live in a country that is steeped in history and heritage, and much of this is to be found in the south-east of England. Here in Surrey and Sussex, we’re fortunate enough to have a fantastic selection of National Trust properties, including Petworth House, Bateman’s, Polesden Lacey and Claremont Garden. National Trust members pay an annual subscription, and in return they are given free entry to more than 500 such venues.
Go lark…in the park!
It doesn’t cost anything to go for a walk, which is great news for anyone who enjoys getting out and about. Days out in Surrey and Sussex don’t need to be carefully thought out, meticulously planned experiences with all the buzzers and bells. They can be simple, straightforward and featuring nothing more than a pleasant wander. You can explore our wonderful towns, our iconic beaches or our picturesque parks without damaging the bank balance. Among this latter group, you’ll find the excellent Tilgate Park in Crawley. Next time you’re in the area, why not give it a try?
