Exploring the wonderful art galleries of Sussex

Art galleries offer a uniquely enriching experience that appeals to a wide range of people, making them something of a must-visit. One of the primary reasons is the opportunity to engage with artworks on a personal level. Viewing art in a gallery allows individuals to interpret and connect with works in their own way, sparking emotions, thoughts and conversations that can often be both profound and personal. Art, just like beauty, should always be in the eye of the beholder.

The atmosphere in art galleries is another key factor in their appeal. The quiet, contemplative environment invites visitors to slow down, focus and fully immerse themselves in the art. This can be a refreshing escape from the fast-paced world outside, offering a moment of peace and reflection, especially perhaps when you seem to have been constantly on the go.

Watch, enjoy, learn!

Art galleries also provide a space for discovery and learning. They often feature works by a variety of artists, from the renowned to the emerging, across different styles and mediums. This diversity broadens our appreciation of art and culture, and the accompanying information, such as artist biographies and historical context, deepens understanding and appreciation.

In addition, galleries foster a sense of community by bringing together people who share an interest in art, encouraging discussion and creating a shared experience that enhances the enjoyment of the visit. There are times in life when nothing hits the right note quite like time spent in an art gallery, and for those of us who live and work in Sussex, there are plenty for us to choose from. Here are three that are well worth exploring.

Something special, right in the heart of Worthing

The impressive Worthing Museum and Gallery is located right in the heart of the town, roughly equidistant from the station and the seafront. You’ll find a range of artworks here, including examples of pre-Raphaelite and modern contemporary. It’s also home to regular temporary exhibitions, and it’s completely free of charge. The next time you’re in town, be sure to call in yourself and see why it has become so popular.

Another jewel in Sussex’s crown surely has to be the Oxmarket Contemporary, a hub for artists, designers and more, all housed within a former 13th century church building. You’ll find it in Chichester, a short walk from the city’s world-famous cathedral. Throughout the year, this venue hosts a significant number of exhibitions, spread across its two separate spaces, so there’s always something to see when you pay a visit.

Finally, if you’re an art lover in East Sussex, you’ll want to spend some time at the excellent Towner Eastbourne, a venue that’s perfect for days out in Sussex with some added culture. Located on the edge of the town’s wonderful Devonshire Park, it’s an award-winning building that really stands out from the crowd. In addition to artworks, it’s also home to a cinema and an excellent gift shop. What more could you possibly want?
