There’s nothing quite like a little nostalgia, especially when it takes you back to a time of style and elegance. The golden age of travel invokes so many emotions, and just about all of them bring you an affectionate glow. The wonderful range of heritage railways in Surrey and Sussex offer a blissful experience, and a golden opportunity to simply sit back and watch as our glorious countryside passes you by.
Perhaps the most celebrated heritage railway in the region is the marvellous Bluebell Railway, which runs between East Grinstead and Sheffield Park, via Kingscote and Horsted Keynes. There’s something special about the steam, the historic rolling stock, the noise and the iconic stations. If you think they have a familiar feel, you may have seen them from the likes of The Wind in the Willows, 102 Dalmatians and Downton Abbey.
The Lady Lisa is waiting to meet you!
Another excellent Sussex heritage railway is to be found at the Lavender Line, a lovingly restored route that was once part of the main line between London and Brighton. Located close to Uckfield in East Sussex, it runs between Isfield and Worth Halt. As well as a chance to travel on a beautiful train (the 1920-built Lady Lisa) visitors can also get up close and personal at the Grade II-listed signal box. Even if you have only a passing interest in train travel, you’ll find something to enjoy here.
It’s worth noting that a ride on a heritage railway is also a journey through engineering history. Enthusiasts can marvel at the craftsmanship of vintage locomotives and carriages, many of which have been painstakingly restored to their former glory. Workshops and museums along the routes can offer deeper insights into the technical and social history of the railways, showcasing artifacts, photographs and interactive exhibits. In addition, be sure to spend some time unwinding in one of the splendid cafés that can be found along the way.
Special events that are oh, so special
Many of our excellent heritage railways often host themed events, from music festivals and afternoon teas to Christmas specials and illuminated trains, enhancing the experience and making them family-friendly attractions. These events, combined with the dedication of the volunteers who maintain and operate the railways, create a warm and inviting atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.
Other, smaller, options in our region include the Bentley Miniature Railway in Ringmer and Riley’s Miniature Railway in Isfield. There’s also a delightful industrial narrow-gauge train that runs through Amberley Museum. In essence, heritage railways in Surrey and Sussex offer a delightful blend of history, scenic beauty and nostalgic charm, making them a treasured experience for locals and tourists alike. We at GoLark love them, and we know many others feel the same.
