Banish those new year blues with some much-needed activity!

The New Year often comes with a mix of hope and post-holiday blues. The excitement of the festive season fades, and the dark, cold days can sap the motivation of even the cheeriest of individuals. But there’s a simple, effective remedy to this slump: getting active through sports and exercise. Moving your body not only lifts your spirits but also provides numerous physical and mental health benefits.

Things to do that are fun and active at the same time

Exercise triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, which can improve your mood almost instantly. Engaging in physical activity outdoors adds an extra boost, as exposure to natural light can help regulate your circadian rhythm and combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Whether it’s a brisk walk, a run in the park or a cycling session, spending time outside can re-energise your mind and body.

Joining a sports club or group activity can also counteract feelings of isolation that often creep in after the holidays. Team sports like football, netball or even casual group hikes foster a sense of camaraderie and accountability, making it easier to stick to your exercise routine. If you prefer solo activities, yoga, swimming, gym workouts or even beach tennis can provide a meditative escape while improving your fitness.

Here in the south-east of England, you’ll also find a wonderful selection of days out in Sussex and Surrey that combine fresh air, exercise and glorious views. One of the finest is to be found at Buckland Park Lake, which features walking trails, a range of birdlife and some 50 acres or so of mature woodland. It’s hard to believe you’re so close to the town of Reigate when you’re enjoying the unspoilt countryside here.

GoLark is the experience finder of choice for many people, and one of the things we do best is seek out the hidden gems that are scattered around the area. One of our favourites is the Rowfant Trail in West Sussex, a woodland discovery path that’s perfect for parents and children alike. Getting out and about is always fun, especially when there’s plenty to see and do.

History, heritage and amazing days out in Surrey and Sussex

We believe that the various National Trust properties in the south-east are ideal for long walks. One of our top ten gems is Sheffield Park and Garden, which is located between East Grinstead and Lewes. Think landscaped gardens, eye-catching lakes, stunning views and an ever-changing vista of flora and fauna.

Of course, you could be looking for a little more in the way of activity at this time of year. Fear not, there are more sporting activities here than you can shake a hockey stick at. They include water sports at Hove Lagoon, the ski school at Knockhatch, go karting in Crawley, FootGolf in Brighton and, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can take to the water at Ardingly Activity Centre in West Sussex. Believe us when we say they’re great – we’ve visited them all.

Go out, go lark about and get active for the new year!
