There are some days out in West Sussex that offer just the one activity, and we at GoLark will say there’s nothing wrong with that, of course. Here at Tilgate Park, however, there are a number of activities that can be enjoyed, and many of them are completely free of charge.
Chief among them is a pleasant walk around the park’s famous lake. There’s a wonderful sense of freedom here, basking in the open air and enjoying views of the water. Whether you’re on your own, with a loved one or accompanied by various children and four-legged friends, these are the moments that seem to make life worth living.
Once home to a large, privately-owned estate set amid the expansive Worth Forest, Tilgate’s Walled Garden is a living testament to what used to be here. These days, it’s a peaceful garden area featuring a maze for the children and an excellent café and bar. Time spent here is sure to relax and refresh you.
And while you’re in the park itself, be sure to check out the celebrated Tilgate Tree Trail. It’s home to a wonderful selection of champion trees from all over the world, including Formosan cypress, Chinese dogwood, Rocky Mountain Douglas fir and a giant sequoia. Trees are numbered so the children can keep track of their progress.
Tilgate Park is located in Crawley, close to the M23 motorway and within easy reach of Horsham, Reigate and East Grinstead. There are some paid activities in the park, including golf, fishing and Go Ape, but there are many things to enjoy here that won’t cost you a penny.
