Wherever you happen to be along the coastline of Sussex, you’ll be close to exceptional walks along the region’s iconic seafront. These can be bracing enough in winter to blow the cobwebs away or warm enough in the summer for you to soak up all the rays that the sun has to offer. From Hastings in the east to Chichester in the west, you just know that spending time on the coast is something very special.
The wonderful RSPB Medmerry Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife and a magnet for those who love to stroll, and stroll…and stroll. Originally a flood plain, it’s now protected by a 7km-long embankment, one that has helped to create a sanctuary for our feathered friends. And one of the highlights for the human visitors is the impressive Periwinkle Shelter. Designed and built by local artists, it’s located just a few yards from the sea.
The Periwinkle Walk is around four kilometres in length, so it’s always pleasant but never too taxing. You’ll find the nature reserve between Bracklesham Bay and Selsey, within easy reach of both Chichester and Bognor Regis. Keep an eye open for linnets, finches and even peregrine falcons, as well as a variety of waders and wildfowl.
