Runnymede and Ankerwycke (National Trust)

Ideal for: Couples, Everyone, Families, Older Flyers, Physically Impaired, Solo Flyers
The village of Runnymede is the riverside site of the sealing of the Magna Carta and across the Thames in Ankerwycke, you'll see the National Trust's oldest tree, a yew that could be up to 2,500 years old. The rich heritage here offers a memorable day out.

Few documents in history have had as great an effect on our lives as the 1215 Magna Carta, and here in the Surrey village of Runnymede is where the great and the good, including King John, gathered to witness its inception. Regarded by many as the birthplace of modern democracy, when we say this location is of major historical importance, we really mean it.

These days, this riverside site offers peaceful walks along the banks of the Thames, and plenty of open areas for the children to enjoy. Be sure to visit the Magna Carta memorial, as well as the memorial to US President John F Kennedy. Runnymede offers a golden opportunity to give the family a pleasing day out in a beautiful location and a fascinating insight into a crucial part of our history.

Across the Thames, you’ll also find Ankerwycke, where you can see the National Trust’s oldest tree, a yew that could be up to 2,500 years old. It’s supposedly to be where King Henry VIII first courted Anne Boleyn. Back at Runnymede, you and your party can relax and watch the world go by at the café while enjoying some well-deserved refreshments.

Runnymede is to be found on the county’s border with Berkshire, within easy reach of London. It’s easily accessible from the M3, M4 and M25 motorways. Days out in Surrey don’t come much more heritage-rich than this.
