Standen House and Garden (National Trust)

Ideal for: Couples, Everyone, Families, Older Flyers, Physically Impaired, Solo Flyers
Arts and Crafts family home with William Morris interiors, set in a beautiful hillside garden.

The Arts and Crafts movement was popular around the world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it was synonymous with the likes of Augustus Pugin, William Morris and John Ruskin. There are several examples of the movement to be found in the UK, but few are as well-known or as popular as Standen House. Located on the outskirts of East Grinstead, it’s the ideal spot for those seeking days out in West Sussex which are enjoyable as well as educational.

Standen House and Garden is owned and managed by the National Trust these days, but there was a time not so long ago when it was a thriving private residence. Created by celebrated architect Philip Webb in the 1890s, it allows visitors a chance to see many superb examples of Arts and Crafts workmanship. The house itself is designed now to look like it did back in 1925, so visitors can enjoy a fascinating insight into how life was lived a century or so ago.

Outside, the formal gardens are peaceful, relaxing and absolutely beautiful. Make time for a stroll, enjoy the lovely views across the local countryside and savour the sights, sounds and smells that the hillside gardens bring all year round. Standen is also home to a lovely play area for the children, and when you all need to stop awhile, there’s an excellent café in a converted 18th century barn.
