Petworth House (National Trust)

Ideal for: Couples, Everyone, Families, Older Flyers, Physically Impaired, Solo Flyers
Inspired by Baroque palaces of Europe, the 17th-century Petworth House displays one of the finest art collections in the care of the National Trust.

One of the most impressive listed buildings in the area, Petworth House is perfect for anyone seeking venues in West Sussex with some added elegance. This remarkable 17th century country house is open to the public throughout the year. As well as being a spectacular property in its own right, it’s also home to a superb art collection, including works by Turner, Reynolds, Van Dyck and Gainsborough.

The surrounding Petworth Park is also a must-visit, offering around 700 acres of landscaped beauty and a chance to see its famous herd of fallow deer. The house and garden are owned and maintained by the National Trust, and they attract a large number of visitors from across the region every year. Be sure to include the Pleasure Garden in your itinerary, too. Designed by Capability Brown, it features serpentine paths, formal flower beds and a delightful woodland walk.

Inside the house, there is much to see and do. Highlights include the historic kitchens, which were once home to 40 servants, while the grand state rooms showcase just how opulent life once was at Petworth House. You’ll also want to spend some time in the Audit Room Café to enjoy some much-needed refreshments. This is a fascinating place to visit, especially if you and your party have a keen interest in local history.
