Go back in time on glorious walks on days out in Surrey

Everyone in the GoLark team will tell you that Surrey, a county rich in history and natural beauty, offers a variety of historic walks that allow you to explore its picturesque landscapes while uncovering its fascinating past. From ancient woodlands and stately homes to medieval ruins and quaint villages, Surrey’s walking routes are steeped in heritage. Let the GoLarkers point you towards the best days out in Surrey that stand out from the crowd.

One notable walk is around Box Hill, a National Trust site offering stunning views of the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Box Hill has been a popular spot for walkers since the 18th century, and, for culture vultures, it played a role in Jane Austen’s novel Emma. The area is dotted with ancient burial mounds, and the iconic Stepping Stones across the River Mole, believed to date back to Victorian times, provide a scenic and historic crossing.

An industrial landmark in a rustic setting

Another historic walk takes you through the charming village of Shere, nestled in the Surrey Hills. Shere’s history dates back over a thousand years, and its well-preserved medieval buildings, including the 12th-century St. James’ Church, offer a glimpse into an interesting past. The Tillingbourne River that flows through the village powered numerous mills during the Industrial Revolution, some of which can still be seen on a walk through the surrounding countryside. One, Chilworth Gunpowder Mills, is a particular favourite of ours.

Leith Hill, the highest point in southeast England, offers another historic trek. At the summit stands Leith Hill Tower, an 18th-century Gothic tower built by Richard Hull, who intended it to be “a place for people to enjoy the glory of the English countryside.” The hill itself has been a site of human activity for thousands of years, with evidence of Iron Age fortifications.

Something special AND something unusual

For those interested in more recent history, a walk around Brookwood Cemetery, one of the largest in Europe, reveals the stories of many notable figures, from Victorian times to the present day. Each of these walks provides a unique way to explore Surrey’s rich history while enjoying its beautiful landscapes. Also known as the London Necropolis, it’s located close to Woking and is within easy reach of Farnborough, Guildford and Camberley.

Another interesting spot is the Langley Vale Centenary Woodland, a tranquil sanctuary that’s perfect for a Surrey day out with a difference. It was created to commemorate the sacrifices made in the First World War, and as a result it plays host to a number of impressive memorials and sculptures. It’s also worth noting that it’s a beautiful haven for wildflowers, insects and birds. And if you’re here with the kids, they’re sure to enjoy letting off some steam at the Poppy Play Area.
