One of the most impressive aspects of visiting an arboretum is that each season offers a completely different landscape to explore. No matter what the season is, time spent at the fabulous Winkworth Arboretum will always be special. Located close to Godalming in the heart of Surrey, it’s a popular spot for days out for both young and old alike.
Originally created in the 1930s and through the 1940s, it owes its existence to the impressive and passionate efforts of Dr Wilfrid Fox, who lived at Winkworth Farm. He bequeathed his beloved arboretum to the National Trust in 1962, and since then the place has become an increasingly popular visitor attraction.
There is so much to see and do here, including of course the chance to wander through the grounds at your own pace, admiring the wonderful collection of trees. There are more than a thousand different species to be enjoyed, as well as a lake, a boathouse and areas of ancient woodland. For the children, the Tree Adventure play area is perfect for a break from the norm.
Needless to say, much-needed (and well-deserved) refreshments can be enjoyed at the lovely Arbor Tearoom, so be sure to bring your hunger pangs with you. And in the summer months, there are special events designed to make Winkworth a must-visit for families.
