Polesden Lacey (National Trust)

Ideal for: Families, Physically Impaired
A 1,600-acre estate with elegant gardens, Edwardian house and plenty of room for the children to play, Polesden Lacey really has something for everyone. Days out here are always enjoyable.

One of the most pleasing aspects of planning a day out in Surrey is the sheer number of historical houses there are to explore in the county. One of the finest of them all is Polesden Lacey, a magnificent Edwardian property that’s also home to 1,600 acres of glorious gardens and countryside. Once home to the celebrated society hostess Margaret Greville, these days it’s rightly seen as a jewel in the National Trust’s crown.

There are so many things to see and do here, starting perhaps with a tour of the house itself. The extensive collections of paintings, ceramics and furniture will be of interest to anyone with a passing fancy for heritage-rich culture. The manicured gardens should also be seen as a must-see, with the walled garden and winter garden both being of particular interest. After that, why not take a stroll around the estate and take in the views of the picturesque Surrey countryside?

For the youngsters, the Kestrel Corner play area offers the chance to let off steam, and the adults will enjoy the retail therapy on offer at the excellent gift shop. And of course, no day out in the country would be complete without the chance to settle back and savour some refreshments. Polesden Lacey is home to both a café and a coffee shop, so there’s definitely no need to be hungry or thirsty. Enjoy!
