Devil’s Dyke

Ideal for: Couples, Families, Older Flyers, Solo Flyers
Stunning views are all around you as savour a wonderful walk at the historic Devil's Dyke.

The GoLark team loves a little history, especially when it’s wrapped up in some mystery, and that’s why we regard the Devil’s Dyke as one of the finest days out in Sussex. Whether you’re keen to savour the fresh air, explore the flora and fauna, admire the views or simply go for a wander with the family, we think you’re going to love it here.

This is the deepest, longest and widest dry valley to be found anywhere in the country, and although the scientists will explain in meticulous detail how it came about as a result of river erosion thousands of years ago, you might prefer a more romantic, more mythical explanation. It’s said the devil decided to dig a dyke here to flood the local villages, in anger at the fact that many locals decided to convert to Christianity. You can choose your own version, of course.

There’s a fabulous circular walk to be enjoyed at Devil’s Dyke, and that’s why it’s such a popular spot. You don’t have to be overly energetic to complete it, as it’s around 3 miles in length, although it does feature one steady incline. It can get muddy in the autumn and winter, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. And bring your phone, too, because you’ll almost certainly want to take some snaps of the glorious views along the way.

This particular walk starts and finishes at the National Trust car park, where you’ll also find convenient toilets. Whether you’re planning to do this alone or with friends and family, we think you’ll love the chance to explore one of the most iconic spots in the whole of Sussex.
